Which charger fits my fatbike?
A battery charger looks like a simple gadget, but it's the part where a wrong purchase has the biggest consequences: the wrong charger won't charge, or it damages your battery. Fortunately, the right choice can be made in three steps: voltage, amperage and connector type. This guide goes through all three.
Step 1 — Determine the voltage: 36V or 48V
Voltage is by far the most important characteristic. Most fatbikes have a 48V battery system; some run on 36V. The charger must match the battery voltage exactly:
- A 36V battery goes with a charger with an output voltage of about 42V (the end-of-charge voltage of a 36V pack).
- A 48V battery goes with a charger with an output voltage of about 54.6V.
Why is this critical? A 48V charger on a 36V battery pushes the voltage far beyond what the cells can handle: at best the battery management system (BMS) steps in, at worst cells overheat and are damaged. The other way round — a 36V charger on a 48V battery — simply won't charge the battery, or barely. You'll find the voltage on the type plate of your battery or your original charger: look for "Output" (e.g. Output: 54.6V 2A = 48V system).
Step 2 — Choose the amperage: 1A, 2A or 3A
The amperage (A) determines the charging speed. More amps = full faster, but also more heat and strain on the battery. The trade-off:

A charger with a lower amperage than your original charger is almost always safe — it just takes longer. A higher amperage you should only choose if the battery manufacturer permits that charging current. If in doubt: stay with the value of your original charger, or ask us.
Step 3 — Identify the connector type
The connector must physically fit the charging port of your battery. The most common types, and how to recognise them:
- 1-pin round connector (DC plug): a smooth round plug with one central pin. The most common one on fatbikes.
- DC 2.1 and DC 2.5: round connectors that look almost identical; the difference is in the inner diameter of the pin opening (2.1 mm or 2.5 mm). If in doubt, measure the pin in your charging port, or compare with your old charger.
- GX12: a round metal connector with a screw ring and usually 2 or 3 pins. Recognisable by the threading you tighten it with.
- XLR: a larger, often metal 3-pin connector with a locking clip, familiar from audio equipment. Widely used with larger battery packs.

Safety
- Never ever use a charger with the wrong voltage, not even "just quickly". If the connector fits but the voltage is wrong, the risk of battery damage is real.
- Always choose a charger with CE marking and charge on a flat, non-flammable surface.
- Don't charge unattended for days on end, and remove the charger from the battery once charging is done.
- A damaged cable or connector? Replace the charger; don't repair it with tape.
Step-by-step plan in brief
- 1. Read the type plate of your battery or original charger: output voltage (42V = 36V system, 54.6V = 48V system).
- 2. Note the amperage of your original charger; choose equal or lower, higher only if the battery permits it.
- 3. Determine the connector type (1-pin / DC 2.1 / DC 2.5 / GX12 / XLR) — compare with your old charger or measure it.
- 4. Compare the combination with the specifications, or ask us if you're unsure.
Compatibility differs by make and model year — so always check the specifications against your specific fatbike rather than going by outward resemblance.
