Choosing & replacing a fatbike display

The display is the nerve centre on your handlebars: without a working display, most fatbikes won't even start. Yet it's also a vulnerable part — one fall, some moisture or a broken cable, and the screen stays black. The good news: replacing it is usually perfectly doable yourself, provided you order the right type . This guide explains which display types there are, which type usually goes on which model and how to tackle the replacement step by step.

What does a fatbike display actually do?

The display is more than a speedometer. It typically shows and controls:

  • Speed — current speed, and often average speed and total distance (odometer) as well.
  • Battery level — in bars or percentages, so you can gauge your range.
  • PAS level — the level of pedal assist (usually 1 to 5) that you set with the plus and minus buttons.
  • On/off and lights — on many models you switch the bike and the lights on via the display.
  • Error codes — in the event of a fault, the display shows an error code indicating where the problem lies (motor, sensor, controller).

Because the display communicates directly with the controller, the type and connector must match exactly. A display that "looks the same" but uses a different protocol or a different connector simply won't work.

The common display types

  • M4: a compact LED/segment display with basic information (battery, PAS level, speed). Widely used on entry-level models and older versions.
  • M5: the most widespread successor: an LCD screen with a fuller readout (speed, mileage, PAS, battery) and integrated control buttons. The type you'll see on a great many popular fatbikes.
  • HC80: a round, centrally mounted colour display. Compact and visually a good deal more modern.
  • H6C: a colour LCD with a separate or integrated control unit, often on newer versions.
  • DZ41: a segment display you'll mainly come across on QMWheel-type models.

Note: manufacturers change displays fairly often between model years and versions. The type number is usually on the back of your current display — that's always your best starting point.

Which display fits which model?

As a rule of thumb — and expressly subject to model year and version:

These are indications, not guarantees: the same model name can have a different display depending on the importer and model year. So always compare the type number on the back of your current display, or send us a photo — we'll gladly take a look with you.

Replacing the display: step-by-step plan

  • 1. Switch off the bike and remove the battery (or disconnect it). Never work on the electrics with the battery connected.
  • 2. Photograph the cable routing of the old display, so you'll know later how everything ran.
  • 3. Disconnect the connector. Pull on the connector housing, never on the cable. Some connectors have an arrow marking or locking ring — remember the orientation.
  • 4. Remove the old display from the handlebars (usually one or two Allen bolts in the clamp).
  • 5. Fit the new display in the same spot and connect the connector: arrows or notches lined up, push in straight, don't force it.
  • 6. Put the battery back and test everything before you ride: on/off, PAS levels up and down, lights and speed readout during a short test loop.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the wiring-harness connector. The pins in the connector are thin; one bent pin and the display does nothing. Always mate the connector straight and in the correct orientation.
  • Forgetting waterproofing. Slide the rubber sealing ring or sleeve fully over the joint. A half-sealed connector seems to work — until the first downpour.
  • Ordering by appearance. Two displays can look identical and still have a different number of pins or a different protocol. The type number counts, not the shape.
  • Routing the cable too tightly along the handlebars. Leave slack for full steering to the left and right, otherwise the cable will pull itself loose or break.

Frequently asked questions

My display has stopped doing anything at all. Is the display broken?

Not necessarily. First check that the battery is charged and properly locked in, and that the display connector is still firmly seated. If the display still does nothing after that, the display or the wiring harness is the most likely cause.

Can I fit a different display type from the one currently on it?

Usually not just like that: the display and controller must use the same protocol and the same connector. So stick with the type currently fitted, or ask us whether an alternative will work with your controller.

My display shows an error code. What now?

An error code usually points to a specific part (motor, sensor, controller or the display itself). Note down the code and email it to us together with the make and model — then we'll help you think through the cause before you order anything.

Is replacing a display something I can do myself?

Yes, for most people it is: it's a matter of a few screws and one connector. Just always work with the battery disconnected and test everything before you take to the road. If in doubt, a bike repair shop will have it sorted in no time.

Can I make my fatbike faster via a different display?
